Marathon Junk Removal Interview – Improving Your Sales Process

Today, I’m excited to share an interview with Christian from Marathon Junk Removal, one of my clients who has built a thriving junk removal business in just nine months. Christian’s story is packed with insights for anyone looking to grow their junk removal company, especially when it comes to sales processes, customer engagement, and scaling effectively.

Getting Started in Junk Removal

Christian got his start in junk removal out of necessity—he needed a way to pay for college tuition. Working a standard job wasn’t enough, so he decided to start a business that leveraged his sales skills.

“Originally, I just started my company to pay for tuition. I knew starting my own business would give me experience, and I wanted to get my feet wet.”

He chose junk removal because it’s a business everyone needs. Trash is constant, whether it’s from homes, offices, or even pets. Recognizing the opportunity in a service that’s always in demand helped him find his niche.

Early Goals and Growth

Christian’s initial goal was simple: replace his sales income from his previous commission-based work. But he quickly realized the potential to grow much faster than expected.

“Three weeks in, I was making $3,000 a week. After a month, I was thinking bigger about how I could expand. Now, my goal is to consistently hit $15,000 a month and see where I go from there.”

Starting in the winter—typically a slower season for junk removal—he managed to set a strong foundation and momentum that positions him well for peak season growth.

The Importance of Google Reviews

One of Christian’s key strategies has been focusing on Google My Business reviews. Within months, he accumulated over 100 genuine reviews. This not only boosts credibility but also helps with organic lead generation.

“I make sure to get reviews in person whenever possible. Right after a job, I ask customers for a review and have them leave it while I’m there. That dramatically increases the chances they actually follow through.”

Mastering the Sales Call

A major factor in Christian’s success has been developing a strong, natural sales script.

  1. Structure your call Christian practiced his script repeatedly until it sounded natural.
  2. Assume the sale Rather than asking customers when they’re available, he provides specific appointment options:
“We have openings tomorrow, 10–12 or 2–4. Which works best for you?”

  3. Handle objections proactively Common pushbacks like “Let me think about it” or “I need to talk to my spouse” have pre-planned responses to guide the customer back toward booking.
  4. Smile on the phone It sounds simple, but a positive, friendly tone makes a big difference.

“Your voice changes when you smile. It helps create a connection and builds rapport right away.”

Scheduling First, Quoting Later

Christian recommends scheduling the job before finalizing the quote. This ensures commitment from the customer and allows time to gather any additional details needed to provide an accurate estimate.

“We schedule them first, then collect pictures or details for the quote. This way, the commitment is already made.”

Advice for New Junk Removal Business Owners

For those just starting or stuck at a certain level:

  • Hire help early Don’t try to do everything yourself. Focus on marketing and sales while a helper handles the manual work.
  • Leverage your sales skills Use scripts, handle objections, and make the customer feel confident in choosing you.
  • Prioritize reviews They build credibility, improve search rankings, and attract new customers.

Christian credits his sales knowledge in part to classic resources like “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie, which emphasizes building relationships and providing value to customers.

Key takeaways

  1. Develop a natural sales script Practice until it flows like a conversation.
  2. Assume the sale Offer specific appointment options rather than leaving scheduling open-ended.
  3. Handle objections ahead of time Have responses ready for common pushbacks.
  4. Get reviews immediately Collect them in person to ensure higher conversion.
  5. Invest in your business and marketing Focus on strategies that scale your growth.

Christian’s approach highlights the importance of structure, consistency, and relationship-building in growing a successful junk removal business. With these strategies, you can improve your sales process, close more leads, and set your company up for sustainable growth.
