Interview With Fire Dawgs Houston – Know Your Numbers

Recently, I had the chance to sit down with Chris from Fire Dawgs Houston to discuss business growth, goal setting, and what it takes to scale a junk removal company successfully. Chris has been in the junk removal industry for eight years, and his insights are valuable for anyone starting or looking to take their business to the next level.

Chris’s Journey into Fire Dawgs

Chris started his career owning a part-time junk removal business called 4 Alarm Junk Removal while working full-time as a firefighter. In 2022, he transitioned to Fire Dawgs as a full-time operator. Over the past eight years, Chris has navigated the challenges of running a junk removal business, learning lessons that he now shares with others entering the industry.

The Importance of Understanding Your Numbers

Chris emphasizes that knowing your business metrics is crucial before attempting to scale. He explains, “Top line is for vanity, bottom line is for sanity.” In other words, it might look impressive to make a million dollars in revenue, but if your net profit is low, the stress and expenses outweigh the reward. Understanding where your money goes—marketing, labor, administration—before growing is essential for sustainable success.

This principle is particularly relevant for junk removal entrepreneurs. Chris notes that many business owners set ambitious goals without fully comprehending the operational and financial implications. Running a $300K operation efficiently can sometimes be more profitable and less stressful than running a $1M operation with poor margins.

Setting Realistic Goals

When it comes to setting goals, Chris recommends aiming for a realistic net profit percentage, not just revenue. For example, if your goal is $500K in revenue with a 25% net profit, you’re aiming to take home $125K. Scaling the business should ideally increase both revenue and profit proportionally, rather than just adding stress and complexity.

Scaling Operations

Chris shared Fire Dawgs’ plans for 2023, focusing on expanding their Houston operation. With three trucks currently in operation, the goal is to scale to a 10–15 truck operation over time, covering major cities across Texas while maintaining quality service.

Firefighters in Junk Removal

Chris highlighted a trend of firefighters entering the junk removal industry. He notes that the skill set and mindset of firefighters—hardworking, problem-solving, and customer-focused—align well with the demands of junk removal. He advises fellow firefighters to identify whether they are operators or visionaries in business. Operators excel at executing and solving problems day-to-day, while visionaries focus on long-term strategy. Success often requires both, either within one person or as a partnership.

Learning from Mistakes

Chris emphasized that mistakes are inevitable in business, but growth comes from how you respond to them. Early on, he tried to force himself into roles that didn’t fit his strengths, leading to over-analysis and delays in decision-making. He also learned the importance of understanding metrics to avoid revenue illusions. These lessons helped him refine his approach and focus on problem-solving and perseverance.

Growing From Small to Large Operations

For businesses earning $5K–$20K a month, Chris advises focusing on all avenues of customer acquisition. This includes repeat customers, email and text follow-ups, yard signs, flyers, and other “boots-on-the-ground” strategies. Digital advertising, like Google and Facebook ads, should complement these efforts rather than replace them. Consistently leveraging multiple channels helps reduce customer acquisition costs and ensures sustainable growth.

Chris’s advice for entrepreneurs can be summarized in two core principles:

  1. Perseverance: Keep pushing through challenges, knowing that growth takes time and effort.
  2. Problem-solving: Address issues proactively, from finding new customers to managing operations and finances.

He notes that success in junk removal, as in any business, requires consistent effort, understanding your numbers, and a willingness to adapt and grow.
